“Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see”Hebrews 11:1 NLT
“Now faith brings our hopes into reality”Hebrews 11:1 TPT
Faith is an essential part of our relationship with God. We’re saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2), it’s impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6), and Jesus taught us that with even a mustard seed worth of faith, mountains of impossibility can be moved (Matthew 17:20).
I love how this verse in Hebrews describes faith as being what brings our hopes into reality and another version says that faith is the substance of things hoped for. As people of faith, our faith is designed to be an active part of all that we do. Our faith in the gospel affects how we approach relationships and work, and how we see the world. But faith also has the ability to bring unseen things into reality. Faith is how we receive from God, but faith is also what God uses in us to get things out of us and into the world. This passage goes on to describe how God created the universe, “v3 By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.” God used faith to make what was in His heart and mind for creation a reality. He didn’t use any building materials, just His words and creative power to form the universe and creation. Faith working with God’s Spirit and power has the ability to bring into reality things that aren’t yet seen. Faith has the power to create the future! This might sound crazy, but this is how God works.
Why does this matter you might ask? Well, I think it matters a whole lot and here’s why. As the church, we’re here to create a new future for the world. The church is the hope of our city and we need to be working in faith to create a better future. A future where hope swallows up hopelessness, a future where healing and miracles defeat sickness and disease at every turn. A future where families are empowered to flourish and overcome challenges, rather than break and fragment under pressure. A future where salvation flows like a river through our suburbs, finding inroads into every home and every life. Only the church can bring a reality like this to a city, and only faith can forge the path to get us there.
Faith is like a muscle and it needs intentional workouts in order to grow. Faith can lay dormant in us, full of untapped potential to bring change, but I see a church that is strong in faith, rising to believe for a future that is bright. A future that becomes a reality because of our faith. Faith doesn’t wait around hoping, faith takes hold of hope and runs with it, calling on the power of God to make it a reality.
I pray that your faith will be stirred to believe God for those things He’s put inside of you, those ideas that are right now in seed form, yet if mixed with some bold faith are just moments away from becoming a reality in your world. I pray that God would stir up your faith for what our church could be for our city. For what it could be if a bunch of faith-filled people were ready to get in the game and believe that God could change our city through His church and were willing to play their part. I pray that we will all grow in faith and learn the joy of creating the future in partnership with God, His power at work with our faith, because then according to Jesus “anything is possible if a person believes.” – Mark 9:23 NLT
