In touch

“We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.”

Hebrews‬ ‭4:14-16‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Something that still takes my breath away is the fact that God became a man and lived among us. That’s Jesus. The creator of all things, left heavens glory, put skin an bone on and chose to live in our fallen world so he could save and redeem us. What an outrageous thought that Deity took on humanity! Yet that’s exactly what Jesus did. Let’s just read it from one more verse and really let it sink in: “So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.” – John 1:14 NLT

What lengths Jesus went to lead us back to a relationship with our Father. While He was here on the earth living as a man, He walked many miles in our shoes. He didn’t live in a palace or command and earthily army, instead He lived a humble, simple life in first century Israel, a life that was very much in touch with the realities of human struggle and pain. I love that Jesus isn’t “out of touch with our reality.” He’s been in your shoes. He knows what you’re facing right now. He’s felt the reality of every emotion you can imagine and He can identify with what you’re feeling and what you’re going through. Let’s face it, life is full of challenges, no day is the same and we never know what might come our way. The good news is that Jesus understands you and what you might be facing and He’s committed to walking every step of it with you until you come through to the other side! All we have to do is “take His mercy, and accept His help.”

Jesus can relate to you on a personal level no matter what situation you’re in or what circumstance you might be facing. In His 33 years on earth He faced every human struggle like disappointment, stress, rejection, betrayal, fears, being misunderstood, physical pain, and even loneliness as He was separated from the Father in the final moments of the cross. Why would He subject himself to such experiences? So He could identify with us and walk beside us in our journey of life and faith. Jesus is our High Priest who is in touch with our humanity and yet He offers us a greater reality through relationship with Him.

Just as Jesus is in touch with our reality I believe He want’s us as His followers to be in touch with the reality of the people in our city. Right now there are people going through all sorts of struggles all around us and God is calling us to walk beside them so we can feel what they feel and have compassion. As a church we need to be in touch with the realities that our city is facing and meet people where they’re at, just as Jesus does for us. We can’t afford to live in a bubble and find ourselves out of touch with the people God is calling us to. Real love has legs and it’s always finding somewhere new to travel. Let’s be motivated by the way Jesus came into our world and venture out into someone else’s world. It’s here that we’ll find opportunity to introduce them to something greater, the reality of God and His radical love for them. Take some time to pray and ask God who’s reality He is calling you to get in touch with. Just imagine what God could do through you!
