Planted in Purpose

Purpose: the reason for which something was intended, is created or exists.

Mark Twain said ‘“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” Discovering our God-given purpose is where we find the ‘why’ for our existence.

Colossians 1:15-18 in the Message says that we can “look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created…Everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.” Everything finds its purpose in Jesus, including your life and mine.

When we focus our life on Christ we start to experience heavens very best for us, right here on earth. We find out that Jesus has “had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.”Ephesians 1:11-12 MSG.

This glorious living is a result of living planted in our purpose! It’s the thriving and fruitful life that we were born for!

We live in a culture that is consumed with consuming. If we’re honest, I think we’ve all felt the pressure to believe that our purpose in life is to acquire and accumulate things, to work our way to better jobs with better pay, and once we have the things that we wanted, to go after bigger and better things.

There’s nothing wrong with things, in fact, Paul said in 1 Timothy 6:17 that “God gives us richly all things to enjoy,” but as individuals created in the image of God we have a far greater purpose than simply living for things. As Proverbs 11:28 so poetically puts it, “A life devoted to things is a dead life, a stump; (but) a God-shaped life is a flourishing tree.”

Things are great, but if things become what we’re living for, then we’re chasing a dead end. Fruitfulness and thriving in life is found not in the things we acquire, but in living a God-shaped life. A life shaped by God’s design and intention for us is like a flourishing tree that’s growing, fruitful and fulfilling its purpose!

A trees purpose is to grow, produce fruit, provide shade and contribute to the environment it’s planted in. For this to happen it needs deep roots that are planted in good soil with access to water and nutrients.

The strength and health of the roots determine how fully the tree can grow into its full potential and fulfil its purpose. I believe it’s the same with us. For us to grow and live out our full potential, we need the roots of our lives to be planted deeply into God’s purposes for us because they strengthen and nourish us for fruitfulness!

I love the prophetic picture of this found in Jeremiah 17:

7 “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord
and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
8 They are like trees planted along a riverbank,
with roots that reach deep into the water.
Such trees are not bothered by the heat
or worried by long months of drought.
Their leaves stay green,
and they never stop producing fruit.

Wow, what a picture! Imagine living a life that is fruitful, meaningful and satisfying no matter what season you’re in! Life brings us all kinds of seasons, some we expect and some we don’t. Some we love and some we’d rather avoid, but when we plant our lives into Gods purpose for us, we’re sinking our roots down into deep waters, a supernatural supply that never runs dry.

A life planted in God’s purpose is nourished and strengthened even when the heat from situations, problems and circumstances are surrounding us. When we plant our lives deep into God’s intention for us and live out of His plans for us, we thrive no matter what ‘things’ we have or don’t have.

Our value is defined not by what we own but by who owns us, and our vision for the future becomes clear because we’re living for our God-given purpose.

Over the next five weeks, we want to let our roots grow deep into Gods purpose for our lives.

We’ll look at five specific purposes that God has created us for and I believe that in refocussing our lives around them we’ll find incredible joy, stability, and strength that will ultimately lead us to become more fruitful and flourishing in every way!
